The modern M3 Competition.
The G80 Competition pairs the S58 straight-six with the M3’s four-door format. This record retains its selected US specification, so the displayed hp and mph remain in the factory source’s units.
A modern performance saloon.
Market and drivetrain options must be checked on the actual car.
US hp and European PS are different units, even when a model name looks identical.
S58 · Inline-six
A 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six. The S58 powers this Competition sedan through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
S58 straight-six engine-family reference. Output and installation remain specific to each car.
Competition specification.
This selection is the 2021 rear-wheel-drive Competition: 503 hp and 479 lb-ft. The manual base M3 has different factory ratings.
Two mono-scroll turbochargers.
Each turbocharger serves a group of cylinders. Electronically controlled wastegates regulate the exhaust energy driving the turbines.
Air-to-water intercooling.
Compressed intake air gives up heat to coolant in a charge-air cooler. Engine and charge-air cooling serve different temperature targets.
A closed-deck foundation.
The S58 uses a rigid closed-deck block and a forged crankshaft. These support the pressures and rotational loads of a high-output engine.
