Know before you buy
- Rod bearing wear and VANOS pump/solenoid faults
- Rear subframe mounting cracks on E46 bodies
- SMG hydraulic pump failure (where fitted)
Commonly reported ownership points, not a guarantee of faults. Always get an independent inspection.
A straight-six with the roof down.
The Z4 M Roadster uses the naturally aspirated S54B32. Its open body gives a different experience from the fixed-roof Z4 M Coupé without turning them into one shared performance specification.

S54B32 · Petrol
The Z4 M Roadster combines the 3,246 cm³ S54 six-cylinder with natural aspiration and an 8,000 rpm engine-speed ceiling. It shares its engine family with the E46 M3.
Natural aspiration
Intake air enters without a turbocharger. Engine breathing, valve timing and engine speed shape the way torque builds.
Rear-wheel drive
A six-speed manual gearbox and variable M differential lock send power to the rear wheels. This entry is the E85 Roadster; the fixed-roof E86 M Coupé is a separate body style.
