Checkpoint: know the machine

3 min50 XP3 questions

You now know several systems. Can you give each one a job without confusing the paths between them?

Your first complete systems check. Connect the airflow, cooling, charging and drivetrain ideas you have just learned.

The idea

Air compression, heat rejection, electrical generation and wheel-speed differences are different jobs performed by connected systems.

Think it through

Name the component for each job: compress intake air; transfer coolant heat to air; generate electrical power while the engine runs; permit different driven-wheel speeds.

Show the reasoning

Turbocharger compressor; radiator; alternator; differential. Explain each answer by its input and output, then trace the complete engine-to-road path once more.

Take away
  • Explain a component through the job it performs.
  • Connect the systems without merging their roles.
