Engine air filter
Filter material traps dirt. What stops intake air from simply going around that material?
Traps dust and dirt before intake air enters the engine.
Pleated material provides a filtering surface. The housing and seals help ensure intake air passes through that surface.
Inside a sealed air-filter housing, upstream of the turbo compressor or naturally aspirated engine intake.
Air passes through a large area of pleated filter material. Particles remain in the material. The housing and seals help prevent air bypassing the filter.
A heavily restricted element can reduce airflow. A damaged element or poor seal can let dirt pass into the intake.
Think it throughCompare two teaching examples: a restricted filter element and a clean element with a poor housing seal. Do they raise the same concern about the intake air?
Show the reasoning
Restriction can limit airflow; a poor seal can allow dirt to bypass the element. Evaluate the filtering material and the route around it as two parts of the same assembly.
- Look for the element, housing and seals together.
- Separate restricted flow from unfiltered bypass.
