Throttle body
A controller requests an opening. Which part moves, and how does the system report its position?
Changes the intake passage opening using a movable throttle plate.
A throttle plate changes the intake opening. In an electronic throttle, an actuator moves the plate and position feedback reports the result.
In the intake path, commonly between the intake duct or charge pipe and the intake manifold.
A cable or an electric actuator rotates the plate, depending on the design. A throttle-position sensor reports the opening. Modern electronic systems use controller commands and feedback.
Actuator, wiring or position-sensor faults can cause reduced-power warnings or inconsistent response. Air leaks can cause related symptoms.
Think it throughIn a simulated electronic throttle, the requested opening changes but reported position does not. Which two observations should you compare before assuming the plate followed the command?
Show the reasoning
Compare the requested position with the measured response. A command is not proof of movement, and an inconsistent position signal still needs investigation of actuator, sensor and wiring.
- Identify the plate, actuator and position feedback.
- Compare requested movement with measured movement.
