Air-conditioning condenser

Releases refrigerant heat to outside air.

Where it sits

In the front heat-exchanger pack.

How it works

Hot refrigerant rejects heat and changes state as air passes over the exchanger.

Think of it as

The outdoor radiator of the cabin cooling system.

Symptoms when it fails

Poor cooling can result from leakage, blocked fins, airflow or other refrigerant faults.

Lifespan

Filters use the service schedule. Motors, controls, seals and trim are inspected for condition and operation.

Repair cost

A filter or switch service differs from dashboard removal or a complete seat mechanism; access can be the main expense.

The BMW angle

A BMW condenser looks radiator-like but carries refrigerant rather than engine coolant.

Used in

BMW cabins as equipped; controls and comfort hardware vary substantially by generation.
