Suspension

Suspension control arm

Guides wheel movement relative to the body.

Drag to turn it Open in the 3D lab
Where it sits

Between wheel carrier and subframe or body mounts.

How it works

Its pivot locations define suspension geometry; bushings and joints allow controlled articulation.

Think of it as

A hinged arm keeping the wheel on its intended path.

Symptoms when it fails

Knocking, wandering or uneven tire wear can involve arms, bushings, joints or alignment.

Lifespan

Wear is condition-based and strongly affected by roads, loads, impacts and seals. There is no universal replacement mileage.

Repair cost

Links and bushings are smaller repairs than complete adaptive struts or air-spring systems; alignment may be needed after work.

The BMW angle

BMW multi-link axles use several links with distinct roles rather than one universal control arm.

Used in

BMW passenger cars and SAVs; spring, damper and axle design depend on chassis and options.
