Yaw-rate sensor

Measures how quickly the car rotates around its vertical axis.

Where it sits

In a defined body location or integrated sensor unit.

How it works

Its measurement is compared with steering and wheel information for stability functions.

Think of it as

A balance observer checking whether the car is turning as expected.

Symptoms when it fails

DSC warnings can involve calibration, signals or supply rather than a mechanical brake fault.

Lifespan

Inspect and service using model-specific guidance, especially after a collision; warning lights require diagnosis.

Repair cost

Calibration, matched modules and post-collision work may dominate cost. An illuminated warning does not identify a replaceable part.

The BMW angle

BMW DSC compares actual motion with driver intent; wheel speed alone cannot describe the car’s rotation.

Used in

BMW safety systems according to market, model year and option package.
