eDrive · Single-motor rear-wheel drive
A current-excited synchronous motor drives the rear wheels. The launch specification reaches 250 kW in My Mode SPORT and up to 430 Nm with Sport Boost or Launch Control.
BMW i3 electric drive unit shown in 2013. System reference: later i4, i5, i7 and iX drive units have different generations, motors and installation.
A rear-mounted electric drive unit
A current-excited synchronous motor drives the rear wheels. The launch specification reaches 250 kW in My Mode SPORT and up to 430 Nm with Sport Boost or Launch Control.
81.2 kWh usable energy
The underfloor lithium-ion battery has 81.2 kWh of usable energy in this specification. Usable capacity is the energy available within the operating window, distinct from gross capacity.
Recover energy during deceleration
The electric drive can operate as a generator when slowing down. Power electronics manage the flow of recovered energy into the battery; physical brakes provide additional stopping force when needed.
2023 European launch specification · Sport / boost peak figures
BMW lists 230 kW outside the SPORT peak setting, and 400 Nm without Sport Boost or Launch Control. The headline 250 kW and 430 Nm describe those peak settings. The 81.2 kWh figure is usable battery energy.
