A 2,979 cm³ direct-injection inline-six with two parallel turbochargers. This N54 specification does not use the later N55 single twin-scroll turbo.

The N54 has six cylinders and two parallel turbochargers. Each turbo is fed by three cylinders.

Exhaust energy turns two turbine wheels. Their compressors supply pressurized air to the intake through charge-air cooling.
Direct injection.
Fuel is injected into the combustion chambers by a high-pressure system. The selected N54 does not have Valvetronic.
