Lesson 3 of 4 · Engines & drivetrains

What changes on an M car?

4 min20 XP3 questions

Two cars both carry an M name. Which hardware details can you actually compare from their sources?

There is no single parts list that describes every BMW M car. BMW’s F10 M5 launch material documents an S63 V8, rear-wheel drive and an Active M Differential, alongside M-specific chassis and braking systems.

The idea

M models vary across generations. Study the documented engine, drivetrain, chassis and brakes for the particular model.

BMW’s M3 CS release documents a different combination, including M xDrive. These examples show why the engine, drivetrain and chassis should be checked for the exact model rather than assumed from the M name alone.

M equipment and engineering vary across models and generations. The illustration groups areas to investigate; it is not a checklist of parts shared by all M cars. Follow the linked BMW documentation for each example.

Think it through

The F10 M5 source lists an S63 V8, rear-wheel drive and Active M Differential. Does the M name establish the same combination for the M3 CS?

Show the reasoning

No. The M3 CS release documents a different combination including M xDrive. Compare each model’s own source rather than carrying one car’s parts list to another.

Take away
  • Name the model and generation with every example.
  • Compare documented systems one at a time.
