High-voltage traction battery

Stores the energy used to propel an electric or plug-in-hybrid BMW.

Drag to turn it Open in the 3D lab
Where it sits

Under the floor or in another protected body location, depending on model.

How it works

Cells are arranged in a controlled pack with protection, monitoring and thermal management; usable and total capacity differ.

Think of it as

A large rechargeable energy tank.

Symptoms when it fails

Range changes or warnings can reflect temperature, usage, software or faults rather than pack failure.

Lifespan

Battery and drive components are assessed with system diagnostics and model-specific warranty and service guidance, not a universal expiry age.

Repair cost

High-voltage work requires trained facilities. A complete pack differs from a serviceable module, sensor or charging-port repair; no numeric quote is asserted.

The BMW angle

BMW battery generations differ in cell format, packaging and system architecture.

Used in

BMW battery-electric cars such as the i3, i4 and iX, plus plug-in hybrids with a smaller, differently packaged traction battery.
