Both the E60 M5 and E63 M6 use the S85 family.
S85 · V10
The E63 M6 uses a 5.0-litre S85 V10 with individual throttles. Its naturally aspirated powertrain makes peak power high in the rev range and brings a very different character from later turbocharged M6 models.

Natural aspiration
Intake air enters without a turbocharger. Engine breathing, valve timing and engine speed shape the way torque builds.
Rear-wheel drive
At launch, a seven-speed SMG automated manual transmission delivered torque to the rear axle. The roof uses carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic to reduce mass high in the body.
