The M3 that changed its voice.
This M3 Coupé puts a naturally aspirated V8 where its predecessors used straight-sixes. Its engine makes its character at high revs, giving it a very different feel from the turbocharged M3 generations that followed.

Its performance asks you to explore the rev range.
The S65 is a V8; the later F80 M3 returns to six cylinders.
S65 · V8
A 3,999 cm³, naturally aspirated V8. Eight individual throttle butterflies and Double VANOS give it a very different character from the turbocharged engines.

The high-revving V8.
The S65 has two banks of four cylinders. BMW quotes 309 kW, equivalent to approximately 420 metric horsepower (PS), and a maximum engine speed of 8,400 rpm.
Individual throttles.
Each cylinder has its own throttle butterfly. The large intake plenum covers much of this hardware, so the throttles are not directly visible in this engine-bay photograph.
Double VANOS.
Variable camshaft timing helps the engine breathe across its operating range. The S65 does not use the N55’s Valvetronic intake-lift system.
No turbocharger in the path.
This engine draws its air without a turbocharger. The simulator therefore removes the turbo whistle and emphasizes the induction and high-revving engine layers.
