Know before you buy
- Battery health: request a state-of-health report
- Check charging port and on-board charger function
- Heavier than combustion equivalents; tyres wear faster

An electric SUV with two driven axles.
The iX xDrive50 coordinates a front and rear electric drive unit. Its dedicated electric layout provides a different starting point from the combustion X5.
A spacious electric SUV.
Battery health, tyres and charging performance need checks.
Two motors do not mean their independent peak outputs can always be added.
eDrive · Electric AWD
BMW i3 electric drive unit shown in 2013. System reference: later i4, i5, i7 and iX drive units have different generations, motors and installation.
Electric drive
Two fifth-generation electrically excited synchronous motors drive the front and rear axles, providing electric all-wheel drive. High-voltage floor battery supplies both drive units. Regenerative braking turns deceleration into recovered electrical energy.
High-voltage battery
Factory battery energy: 111.5 kWh gross and 105.2 kWh usable. Gross capacity includes energy outside the usable operating window. These figures belong to the specification year shown.
Recover energy while slowing down
The drive motor can act as a generator during deceleration. It converts some motion energy into electrical energy for the battery. Recovery depends on traction, battery charge and operating conditions; friction brakes are still required.
Fixed-ratio drive
This electric powertrain uses fixed-ratio reduction gearing instead of a multi-speed manual gearbox. There is no petrol-engine idle, turbocharger or exhaust muffler.

Ownership and buying
- Buying tips
- Battery health, tyres and charging performance need checks.
- Maintenance notes
- Check high-voltage service records, battery-condition evidence and charging operation. Use the BMW service schedule for the actual VIN and market.
